Can anyone direct me to the current car seat laws for military in Germany? I tried googling it and came up with a S&S article from 2008 but not sure if that's current. It did mention that we follow rules stated in the SOFA agreement rather than German laws but I'm not sure where to find those.

Call Vehicle Registration. They should know, or at least be able to point you in the right direction.

You still have to follow most German laws also. So research the German car seat law.

Whilst in Germany you must abide by German traffic law (despite what your SOFA agreement or command may have you believe).

German law requires children up to 12 years of age who are less than 1.5 metres (59 inches) to ride in an approved car seat or booster (approved seats will have an EU number/sticker/tag.
If all other restraints are being used by other children, the child may ride in the back seat with a seat belt. Children under three years of age may not be in a moving vehicle without a suitable car seat, and no rearward facing infant seats are allowed in the front of a vehicle which has an airbag.
These laws also apply when riding in a taxi.

But check this out... US Car Seat Laws Trump German Laws

VeggieGirl - I think you are reading more into it than what is there. The reason you can use seats that conform to U.S. law is that it is stricter. So, if your seat conforms to U.S. safety regs, you are good for Germany, too.

The S&S article clearly states "The agreement does not exempt U.S. forces from following German rules on who must use a child seat in a vehicle that would normally require seat belt use."

What are you trying to figure out, specifically? Maybe by knowing what it is you actually want to know, people can be of more help.

When I went to the German/American friendship society office in Ktown, they had a pamphlet with all the information you need. It's right next to the Japanese gardens, across from City hall (the big tall white building). If you are leaving Vogelweh from the shoppette gate, turn right and stay on that road, past the Esso, past pizza attack, curve on the new bridge over dino park. when you straighten out you will see the big white building. Look for airplane fish on left. that's the office.
