Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has ever been through this before. Our car broke down in Belgium and my husband is stuck. Has anyone ever been through this? Is there any advice that anyone can offer?

Torreyjs --- 11 years ago -

Im guessing you don't have ADAC?

Atticus Finch --- 11 years ago -

If you're outside of Germany it would be ADAC Plus! Do you have it?

MacGruber --- 11 years ago -

I didn't know Belgium was in Germany.

Nomen Nescio --- 11 years ago -

It's not. What made you think it was?

You haven't answered the questions about ADAC. Please give us an update and we can try to help. Also, if he is TDY that can make a difference. PM if you need to.

If you're not going to respond in a timely manner to a question you were asked, why even bother asking for advice? Just my two cents....

a2902404uu --- 11 years ago -

Sorry for the delayed response I have been on the phone trying to help him out. No, we do not have any form of ADAC and he is not on TDY. Thanks for any help.

Atticus Finch --- 11 years ago -

Is he stuck on a major motorway/autobahn?
Where in Belgium?
What is wrong with the car? Flat? Just quit?

a2902404uu --- 11 years ago -

He was able to remove the vehicle from the R21B. Very close to Brussels, about three miles from the center. Car began to lose power while driving and it will not start. It will attempt to turn over, but will not start.

Out of gas?

a2902404uu --- 11 years ago -

No, 3/4 of a tank left.

masterdag --- 11 years ago -

Type of car?

Atticus Finch --- 11 years ago -

diesel or gas?

a2902404uu --- 11 years ago -

gas, 2001 Nissan Frontier

masterdag --- 11 years ago -

Still has battery power and trying to start, or dragging battery as if ready to die?

a2902404uu --- 11 years ago -

No, it seems to be more os a starter issue. It has no problem with the initial turnover, but just will not start. Could it be fuel injectors?

a2902404uu --- 11 years ago -

Sorry, I have to go to sleep, but I will look at the responses as soon as I wake up in the morning. He has made it to a hotel and he is safe for the evening. Thank you for your help!

masterdag --- 11 years ago -

Did it stop running while moving down the road, if so it is not the starter. Fuel injectors? Really I don't think so, normally with dirty injectors you would have a rough running engine first for some time. I have an idea what it may be but I need more info.

you could still call ADAC. Happened to me before, I wasn't a member but needed help, so the guy came and I signed the membership for 1 yr right there. Give them a call and ask.0180 5 10 11 12

masterdag --- 11 years ago -

My best guess without looking at the vehicle is your timing belt may have slipped or is gone. Some vehicles with bad alternators will cause the same problem but usually drains the battery quickly.

As he's stuck in Belgium it might be better for her to go to the ADAC office in K-town and join on the spot (ADAC Plus). After she joins, she calls hubby and gives him the info. He then calls ADAC and requests assistance.

Whatcha think?

Atticus Finch --- 11 years ago -

your timing belt may have slipped or is gone

Me thinks that's an expensive repair! Especially for an American in a foreign country....dunno...just thinkin'.

angel2009 --- 11 years ago -

I think she should call the service number now. Doesn't hurt to ask.
And not everyone is trying to rip off an american....just thinking!

seriously --- 11 years ago -

just wanted to add my two cents about the ADAC membership. Do it! ADAC/ and the ADAC plus membership are SO worth it while living over here! The
money is minimal. One tow and the membership is essentially paid for a year. Great suggestion by Angel and Atticus.

Atticus Finch --- 11 years ago -

Evidently ain't happenin' tonight as she went to bed! lol..

And not everyone is trying to rip off an american
True but if Murphy is around it's a big possibility! Either way if it's a timing belt issue it could be very expensive depending on how difficult it is to get to the belt. Anybody have an estimate in dollars for that repair on that particular vehicle?

masterdag --- 11 years ago -

Isn't the dollar worth more in Belgium?

After reading through the post I'm almost sure that the alternator is shot. Not like the old days when a car would stay running once started, newer cars have components that rely on direct current from the alternator.

But as for the timing belt, if its gone, theirs your problem.

Atticus Finch --- 11 years ago -

Have used the towing service at least four times this year alone! The membership has paid for itself many, many times over in the 19 years we've had it. I highly recommend the "Plus"...it too is well worth the small cost for piece of mind.

WOW angel2009, THANK YOU --- you could still call ADAC. Happened to me before, I wasn't a member but needed help, so the guy came and I signed the membership for 1 yr right there. Give them a call and ask.0180 5 10 11 12

I WILL PUT THEIR NUMBER IN MY GLOVE COMP.

Wow atticus
