Dear KMC Military Family Housing Stairwell Residents:
Effective immediately, smoking is prohibited in all Stairwell Housing units. This change will ultimately improve our readiness posture by increasing the well-being of all stairwell housing residents IAW AFI 40-102, Tobacco Use in the Air Force. Service members, their dependents and guests are no longer authorized to smoke tobacco products in stairwell apartments, including the balconies, patios, storage, and community rooms, as well as exterior common areas, except for designated smoking areas.
We look forward to continually improving the quality of life for all service members and their families in the KMC. Please see the attached letter details. (I have letter but dont know how to attach it here on RU)
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I think that is good. The smoke doesn't say in their area alone and the way it seeps into the building. You don't get it out that easily. Plus, if someone moves in next with respiratory problems.
I thought at the meeting i was told the general said ppl could smoke now in the bldgs. i dont smoke. I would like to see more of the email and pass it around. my stairwell stinks bad now. I dont care bout the balconys, just ppl need to take care of the butts from them instead of throw them on the ground.
I wonder if they will bring this to Spangdahlem/Bitburg.Smoking is the reason why our neighbors moved in from housing on Spang. The ppl below them smoked like there was no tomorrow and it traveled up into their apartment. Ewww.
I brought this subject up to the highest ranking person I knew because people were smoking right outside my son's bedroom window (being on 1st floor sucks sometimes)...I felt like our rights to being able to breathe in clean air in our own home were taken from us...so i complained...and kept complaining until the right people heard me!
well i guess they have a point. i dont smoke but know how bad the smell gets in and its a hard job to get rid of it. i was told the other day by someone that living on base was a priverlage and so you the ppl need to respect that. just what i was told. i dont live on base so it doesnt affect me but can understaand both points of view.
I suppose that is true, anne. Personally I think this will make people who would normally smoke out on their balconies smoke in their house instead, whether it is allowed or not. It doesn't bother me one way or another, since I don't live on base and no longer smoke (yay).
I just think of those children who don't have that choice and have to inhale that smoke.Sorry but it is a good thing in some areas but taking your right from smoking on the balcony is another,it is an addiction afterall.Hmm...
The problem I see with this is that who's going to respond to all these complaints? I've seen past threads on here where people complained about dogs barking or being kept on balconies all the time and the cops don't have enough time to respond to all of them so I wonder how seriously they will take a smoking complaint?
i think you should not smoke inside stairwells or inside your apartment.. BUT you should be able to smoke on your own balcony. smoking is legal, and it is someones choice. why take that away, and where else would they possibly go to smoke?
Most military regs state that you can't smoke within 50 ft of a building, so why would military base housing be exempt? Dorm rats haven't been able to smoke inside their rooms or on their balconies for awhile now. I think it's a good idea when the military is paying for the health care for all the people, and some of them are having reactions to the second hand smoke. That stuff is nasty, and kids shouldn't be forced to breathe it in simply because the downstairs neighbor couldn't be bothered to smoke away from the building.
I can understand them not wanting people to smoke on the balcony. The smoke either blows into the the next apartment over's open window or to the above/below balcony's open door.
Smoke is very offensive to those who do not smoke, and smoking on your balcony just blows smoke in other people's windows. You are not blowing it, but just the way smoke travels, it will get sucked in and most people don't want themselves or their families(and cute BABIES!) exposed to smoke.
BUT you should be able to smoke on your own balcony. smoking is legal, and it is someones choice. why take that away
You are right, it is someone's own choice if they want to inhale smoke into their lungs, which is why you shouldn't be allowed to smoke on your balcony (unless you live in a stand alone house), forcing your neighbors to inhale your smoke. I don't know if they have a/c in stairwell housing, but they don't off base and everyone keeps windows open in the summer. Everyone should have a choice to have clean air and not have their own apartment smell like a bar (or close their windows and wither away in the heat!)
People who do smoke never realize how awful smoke is for non-smokers.
My father bought a house, and the previous owner was a smoker. You could see bright white squares on the wall where pictures had been. The walls were yellow and stained from all the smoke. I would say that is a sign that smoking is awful for you, but I love me some curry and that stuff will stain anything it touches. ^_^
I can see your point, Blueser. The last house I bought took alot of scrubbing to get the stuff off of the walls. That is why I have always smoked outside. I wouldn't even smoke inside if other people smoked in their houses.
Eh, either way, it is now regulation, and nothing said here will change that. If you have a problem with it, take it up with someone who can make a change, or move off base to a building that does not have the regulations. Plenty of other people are on waiting lists and will be happy to move in to your house.
Military personel gets paid by the gov. THe gov. gets the money from the tax payers. The mil. Perso get sick that is more money from the gov. from the tax payers to treat the sickened. I say, in order to join gov. jobs you shall not smoke or stop as you sign your contract/ enlistment papers you name it.
